Digital marketing has become a wildly powerful tool for building relationships, improving brand visibility, and generating sales. There are limited laws and regulations in the digital marketing world apart from advertising laws, so digital marketers must rely on their own moral compass to create ethical content.
Sometimes, marketers abuse this freedom. Clickbait, virtue signaling, emotional manipulation, exclusivity, Black Hat SEO tactics, and just downright ignorant campaigns have run rampant in our industry for years.
It’s time for a change. People are demanding change.
Thanks to the world-wide-web, historically marginalized groups have a voice and they’re not afraid to use it. It’s time we start listening. People are having real conversations about neglected and broken social systems. One of the social issues that has been at the forefront of our generation is ethical marketing.
Our younger generations are insanely perceptive, intuitive, and aware of traditional marketing tactics. After seeing over 5,000 ads per day for the majority of our life, we can spot clickbait, tokenism, false advertising, spam, and inauthenticity from a mile away. People are no longer satisfied with brands doing the bare minimum and staying neutral in the face of crisis. Opportunistic and tone-deaf campaigns just don’t fly anymore. People are demanding that brands they engage with be transparent, accountable, and socially conscious.
Maybe you feel a bit intimidated by all of this? I mean it’s hard not to when cancel culture is ready to come for you faster than you can say “We’d like to issue our sincerest apologies.” But this movement is not about policing, political correctness, or shame. It’s about humanity. People just want to connect with brands that are doing their best not to make this crazy world worse.
As creatives, we have the power to influence thought, opinion, and behavior. It is our responsibility not to take advantage of that power, but to use it to improve our communities and give a voice to the voiceless.
Socially conscious or “woke” (gross, I hate that term) marketing doesn’t have to be difficult. My philosophy is simple: Be real. Be kind. Build community.
